HISTORY OF MARSEILLE SOAP.
Very popular in France and abroad, traditional Marseille soap, composed of 72% oil, is a simple product whose qualities and multiple uses have been touted for centuries. Economical, ecological, and very effective, it is used both for personal hygiene and home maintenance.
This cube, originally from Marseille, is still made in its region, according to the traditional method in cauldrons, under the expert eye of a master soap maker, made exclusively from vegetable oils, without perfume, coloring, or preservative. Despite its specificity, many copies are made around the world, in an abusive manner, without respect for traditional methods and outside the production area.
The traditional Marseille soap is made in large open-air cauldrons, from oils exclusively of vegetable origin, without coloring, perfume, or preservatives. These oils mixed and cooked in the cauldron, under the action of soda, gradually transform into soap. Only the master soap maker has the know-how transmitted for several centuries to obtain authentic Marseille soap. It guarantees compliance with the five stages of the "Marseilles process".
La Savonnerie du Midi is a founding member of the Union of Marseille Soap Professionals (UPSM)
This association was created in 2011 by four historic soap factories in the Marseilles basin and aims to promote and defend traditional Marseille soap. To this end, this private association has deposited a collective mark that guarantees constant quality, respecting precise specifications:
Its geographic origin: it must be manufactured in Marseille and its region, a historic basin for the manufacture of Marseille soap. Its manufacturing process: it must be cooked in a cauldron for about 7 to 10 days, according to the five stages of the Marseille process. Its composition: Marseille soap must be composed of vegetable oils only (no animal fat). It is fragrance-free, colorant-free, preservative-free, and additive-free.
In 2016, the UPSM decided to present a file to the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property), so that Marseille soap is recognized by an IGPIA (Geographical Indication for Industrial and Handicraft Products), and 'It thus appears in the list of manufactured products soon to be labeled by public authorities. Marseille soap was the first industrial and artisanal specialty to seek this recognition because the law is recent and its last implementing decree was officially published on March 10, 2016. Alongside the UPSM, the Savonnerie du Midi is therefore very involved in the defense of the heritage values of Marseille soap and guarantees these customers' compliance with the UPSM charter.
